Rei Ki

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means
"God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy".
So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." Reiki is a Japanese
technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen
"life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life
force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is
high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

How does Acupuncture work?

Your connection has been lost
Eastern Explanation:
The Eastern Explanation for how Acupuncture works is that
the life energy flowing thorough the body which is termed Qi
can be influenced and balanced by stimulating specific points
on the body. These points are located along channels of energy
know as meridians that connect all of our major organs. According
to Chinese medical theory, illness arises when the cyclical flow of
Qi in the meridians becomes unbalanced or is blocked.
Western Explanation: Definition of Acupuncture- Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired effect.
Explanation of how it works- Acupuncture points are areas of designated electrical sensitivity. Inserting needles at these points stimulates various sensory receptors that, in turn, stimulate nerves that transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary systems at the base of the brain. The hypothalamus-pituitary glands are responsible for releasing neurotransmitters and endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing hormones. It is estimated that endorphins are 200 times more potent than morphine. Endorphins also play a big role in the functioning of the hormonal system. This is why acupuncture works well for back pain and arthritis and also for P.M.S. and infertility. The substances released as a result of acupuncture not only relax the whole body, they regulate serotonin in the brain which plays a role in human and animal disposition. This is why depression is often treated with acupuncture. Some of the physiological effects observed throughout the body include increased circulation, decreased inflammation, relief from pain, relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count which stimulates the immune system.

Chinese medicine is quite complex and
can be difficult to comprehend

Some acupuncture points
This is because TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is based, at
least in part, on the belief that we live in a universe in which everything is
interconnected. What happens to one part of the body affects every other
part of the body. The mind and body are not viewed separately, but as part
of an energetic system. Similarly, organs and organ systems are viewed
as interconnected structures that work together to keep the body
functioning. Although the principles of TCM may be difficult for some to
comprehend, there is little doubt of TCM's effectiveness. Several studies
have reported on TCM's success in treating a wide range of conditions from
nausea and vomiting to skin disorders, tennis elbow and back pain (to name
just a few). More Americans are using herbal remedies and other
components of TCM than ever before. The reasons for this vary, but
the increasing interest in, and uses of, TCM is due in large part to its
effectiveness, affordability and lack of adverse side-effects compared to
Western medicine.
